Meditation Benefits for Skincare

The Surprising Link Between Mindfulness and Beauty

Looking for an easy way to improve your skin and your overall well-being in the process? If so, we’ve got an excellent beauty tip that just might surprise you: try adding meditation to your daily routine!

According to experts, meditating on a consistent basis has many benefits for addressing common skincare concerns, including acne, aging, sensitive skin and even chronic conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Here’s how it works:

What is meditation?

Meditation is a mindfulness practice that involves quieting the mind and using intentional awareness to create a calmer, and clearer emotional state. This can be done a number of ways, such as sitting and focusing on the breath, using a guided meditation app on your phone, or choosing a focal point such as a mantra, to help reduce mental chatter for a period of time.

Why Meditation?: Understanding how stress impacts the skin

As you’ve likely heard by now, the purpose of most meditation practices is to reduce both physical and mental stress. Studies have shown meditation to be effective for alleviating anxiety, and pain, while improving focus and mental stamina, but what it does in particular for your skin is lower inflammation levels, by inducing a more relaxed state.

What most of us don’t realize is that any time the body is in a state of stress and producing stress hormones, the skin is one of the first aspects of your wellness to suffer. Stress creates internal inflammation, which is one of the primary causes of conditions such as acne, as well as breakdown of important tissues such as collagen and elastin, i.e. the building blocks of youthful skin. Over time, chronic stress can accelerate the aging process, causing an uptick in issues such as dry skin, dullness, fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration.

Supporting Your Skin Through Mindfulness: How to incorporate meditation into your daily life

If you have yet to experience the many benefits of meditation for yourself and are motivated by the potential for a little radiance boost, getting started is simple. Here are a few helpful tips:

●  Tip #1: Start With Just a Few Minutes - According to researchers, about 20 minutes per day is the optimal amount. However, in the beginning, it’s perfectly fine to start with just a minute or two. As you get comfortable with your practice, you then can add more minutes, little by little.

●  Tip #2: Keep It On The Calendar - Meditation works best when done consistently, so if you’re the type to forget or skip steps in your routine, you may find it helpful to set an alarm for a specific time of day, or pencil it in on your planner so that you remain accountable.

● Tip #3: Be Patient With Yourself - Even the most experienced meditation practitioners can struggle with focus from time to time, but getting frustrated when this happens will only increase your stress levels. Instead, if you find your mind wandering or notice you had a less than perfect session, all you have to do is forgive yourself and try again tomorrow.
